How To Grow Asparagus from seeds
Pot Size : Grow Asparagus in a pot/grow bag with a diameter of at least 18 inches depth and 18 inches diameter ie., 18×18 Grow Bag. Planting in larger container/grow bag is essential, as asparagus crowns must be planted deeply.
Soil Requirements:
Asparagus Seeds need well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Use soil mix with combination of Red Soil , Vermicompost and sand at a ratio of (2:1:1) . Also add 2-5% of Neem Powder to the soil mix. Neem Powder will act as fungicide. Asparagus won’t grow in acid soil.
Sowing Seeds :
Sow Seeds 0.5 to 1 cm deep. Seeds must germinate in 10 to 20 days. After germination, thin plants to 12 inches apart.
Light and Water requirements:
Asparagus needs regular watering and full sunlight.
Common issues:
You can manage common asparagus beetles by handpicking them and dropping them in a pail of soapy water. If you find a lot of asparagus beetles in your garden you may want to use a pesticide like Protector-Bio Insecticide for Pest Control, Guardian-Bio Insecticide or Neem oil.
Harvesting:
Asparagus takes two years to produce abundant harvests but is definitely worth the wait. Harvest them when they are 6 to 10 inches above the soil line, but before the flower buds are open. Simply cut or snap off the spears at ground level.
